Well, hello there, friends! I’m back! Didja miss me? So much has happened since I last posted, but I’ll discuss that in a bit. First, here’s a new snippet from my Christmas-themed WIP, Season of Love!
Continuing from where we left off… (Amy’s mom is trying to get her inside Newtonville Hall where half the town has gathered for her “surprise” going away party)
Still, her mother wouldnāt budge. Sandra Campbell may have been a top-tier Bingo player, but her poker face was crap. āYou need to come inside. Please.ā
Amy frowned. āWhy?
āBecause . . . Oh . . . I donāt know why they had to put me in charge of this.ā The older woman dropped her head into her hands and sighed. Ā
Things were getting stranger by the minute. āIn charge of what?ā Amy demanded. āMom, whatās going on?ā
The older woman shifted in her seat, letting the silence stretch between them. āItās a surprise going away party,ā she mumbled into her hands. āHalf the townās in there, ready to give you a proper Newtonville send-off. My job was to keep it a surprise, which sounds a lot easier than it is, but I spent all day trying to think of a good reason for you to go in there, and look how well that went!ā
***End of WWW post, but hereās a bit more!***
Amy bit back a grin at her motherās anxious rambling.
āThe catās out of the bag,ā Sandra continued, ābut thereās no way Iām letting my lack of imagination ruin this party. So you need to put on a happy face, get inside, and act surprised, okay?ā
When she finally lifted her head, her apprehensive expression morphed into something more closely resembling suspicion. āYouāre not mad?ā she asked carefully.
āI mean, Iām kind of impressed, really.ā Amy chuckled. āYou kept me distracted while all this was happening right under my nose. I can usually smell a ruse from a mile away.ā She smiled affectionately at the woman she often struggled to see eye to eye with. āThanks for doing this, Mom.ā
āIt was actually Mattās idea.ā
And that’s where I’ll leave things for now. *maniacal laugh* Thanks so much for stopping by and be sure to visit the otherĀ Weekend Writing Warriors!
Well, I’m in my new home, and I couldn’t be happier! It’s been fun getting settled and making it my own. I’m still waiting on a few key pieces of furniture, like a couch, but my giant red beanbag chair has been a pretty good substitute. Once everything’s in place, I’ll take a video. I’ve been sharing pics and progress updates in my newsletters and on social media, so feel free to follow me there if you’re so inclined. š I’ll be back with another snippet next week. See you then!
I am not a fan of surprises, myself, so I’m glad Mom came clean and Amy is such a good sport about it. A feigned surprise is much more satisfying to the receiver who isn’t caught slack-jawed in all the pictures.
LOL slack-jawed is never a good look. Thanks, Nancy!
Oh, that last line is the clincher! Very curious to know how she’ll react to that information!
Glad you’re settling in well to your new home!
Thanks, Jessica! I’m so happy to be in a bigger space, and I’m getting to know all my neighbours and loving how close I am to work now. Life is good! š
Glad you’re enjoying your new home! Enjoyed the snippet…yeah, I loathe surprises too.
Thanks, Veronica! So no surprises for you or Nancy. Got it. lol
That last line! Might be the start of second thoughts about leaving town…
I’m so happy for you that the new place is working out so well!
Right you are, my friend! Thank you so much! It’s definitely my happy place. Hopefully living here will help get the words flowing again too! š
Oh, yeah. Leaving it on that last line is Machiavellian! Can’t wait for her response to that! Tweeted.
š Well, you’ll only have to wait a week! Thanks so much, Jenna!
Oh that last line! š
And yes, vids of the new home! Congrats!!
I would want to know about the surprise. š Enjoyed the snippet, and I hope you’re happy in your new home!
