Hello, my friends! Thanks so very much for your kind words and birthday wishes last Sunday. I’ve had an awesome birthday week! Here’s a little party favor for all of you…another snippet from Learning to Love!
Continuing from where we left off….
Rebecca wiped her mouth, horrified by the gob of hummus the Kleenex collected. She might have noticed she was wearing half her lunch on her face if he hadn’t come in there looking all…older than she expected. He had to be in his late twenties. Maybe even early thirties. Tall. Insanely handsome. Soon to be working in very close quarters with her for the next fifteen weeks.
And completely off-limits.
Sighing in frustration, she collected the remains of her lunch and threw it in the fridge, grabbed her whistle, and headed for the gym.
Here’s the blurb:
Rebecca Ledgerwood is a Physical Education teacher who’s ready to invest some sweat equity into a lasting romance. On a whim, she has her palm read before summer vacation ends, and she’s told she’s an old soul who’ll find happiness with a younger man.
William Whitney leaves an unfulfilling career to pursue teaching and gets placed at Rebecca’s school for his Physical Education practicum. He’s desperate to make a difference, convinced that the choices he made in the past contributed to his younger sister’s death. Kendal High School is nothing like the prep school he attended as a teenager, but he’s determined to make the most of his time there, especially if it makes Rebecca notice him.
Though they come from vastly different backgrounds, there’s an undeniable chemistry that sparks between the two. They resist, as they must, until his practicum ends, but when he’s offered a teaching position at his former prep school, will he take the easy way out, or fight for what’s right in front of him?

You guys, I had the most amazingly fun night last night! You know what I did? I went to a silent dance party! Sounds crazy, right? Well, here in Ottawa, we have this thing called Winterlude. Yeah, we actually CELEBRATE winter! Last night, two DJs put on a show at Confederation Park that was entirely free. Everyone got a pair of headphones and you could switch between the two DJs at any point in time and choose the music you wanted to hear. You don’t hear a thing when you take off your headphones; all you see is a bunch of nutty people dancing, and it’s absolutely hilarious and fantastic! And, fittingly, it snowed the entire time we were dancing. Here’s a little visual:
If you ever get a chance to try it, I highly recommend it! Wishing you all a fabulous February! 🙂
Sounds like she’s trying, and probably failing, to convince herself to behave. That party sounds like crazy fun!
Lol exactly. It WAS! Crazy fun! Can’t wait to do it again! 🙂
Ha! Keep it in check, Beck! Loved the snippet!
LOL I might have to use that line in my story. 😉 Thanks, Maggie! <3
Ha! Off limits, she says. 😉
We’ll see how long that lasts. 😉 Thanks, Amy!
Your silent dance party just knocked the snippet right out of my brain. t looks like so much fun!! lol I would do it–even celebrate winter. 😉
Your poor characters–you do put them through such humiliation. Lunch on her face, indeed!
Haha! You should definitely try it, Teresa! I think you’d love it!
I know, I torture the poor things. I like to humanize them through humiliation…or something. lol 😀
Oh how embarrassing. I hope he didn’t notice. Great snippet
Oh, he sure DID! Lol thanks, Naomi! 🙂
I have to ask: have you been working with any male teacher’s practicums lately? Just checking whether this story is based on real life. Also, isn’t it true that Ottawans have a ‘silent dance’ because so many of them have had their ears frozen off? 😉
Hee! I actually have, but this is mostly fictional. Of course, a few little real life moments might slip through the filters. 😀
LOL the headphones acted like earmuffs! We may be crazy enough to live in the frigid tundra, but we know how to prepare for it.
Winterlude sounds delightful! (It actually makes sense to celebrate Winter… 1) it makes it pass by just that bit faster, and 2) most mythology suggests the idea of nature resting… so when you need Spring to appear… time to crank up the festivities!)
Rebecca is already having a hard time of it. And yet… I think she’s more happy than embarrassed
I love that idea, Eden, about waking up spring!
Maybe a combo of happy and embarrassed…haparrassed? Embappy? 😀
I love the completely off limits part, it always means someone is going to push off the limits, lol.
You know it! We always want what we shouldn’t have, right? 😉 Thanks, Linda!
I’m always a glass half-full sort of gal, so I’m going to believe that he thought the teeny little blob of hummus looked adorable on her. Right now he’s already half-smitten and hoping to see a spot of mustard on her cheek at their next meeting.
I think the silent dance is the craziest thing I’ve ever…Well, I was going to say ‘heard,’ but I guess that’s not the proper word? Hee. Anyway, I’m laughing just from picturing some clueless person walking by and trying to figure out what in the world is going on. You have to use this in a story sometime!
Hummus always looks adorable on me, too. 😉 *adds mustard bit to outline*
If you’re ever with me in Ottawa, I’m SO taking you silent dancing! You’ll love it!
